WWW.eyenet.org - The Foundation of The American Academy of Ophthalmology is The Academy's primary resource to address the needs of the public and the members by focusing on public service, research and Ophthalmic Heritage. The public service activities of The Foundation are directed at those individuals over 65 - under 4 - suffering specific vision complications for which they have limited economic support. The public service aims of The Foundation draws on a wide range of programs to provide the services or support needed by the disadvantaged. The Research goals include awarding significant support in awards to advance the science of ophthalmology. The Academy's collection of ophthalmia now constitute the largest collection in the world. More than a mere museum, the collection serves as a reference treasure on the history of the profession. Educational programs based on this program guide children and adults alike in a greater understanding of the value of vision in enhancing life.

WWW.ascrs.org - American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery - ASCRS Mission: The mission of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery is to raise the standards and skills of anterior segment surgeons through clinical and practice management education and to work with patients, government and the medical community to promote delivery of quality eye care.

WWW.eyeinfo.com - Refractive surgery is surgery performed on the eye to create a better focus and lesser dependence on glasses and contact lenses. In recent years the field has expanded to include operations for all types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. The recent increase in popularity of refractive surgery is directly related to its success in producing effective and predictable visual improvement without significant side effects. Strictly speaking, refractive surgery might also include procedures which have a refractive impact, e.g., cataract extraction and corneal transplantation, both of which signficantly affect the refractive error of the involved eye. However, this effect is mostly secondary to the actual purpose of the surgery, which is usually to eliminate an opacification in the normally clear line of vision. Therefore, this discussion will be limited to those procedures which possess the primary intent of lessening the refractive error of the eye.
