Whereas
, this year marks the 125th Anniversary of the founding of the City of DeLand by Henry Addison DeLand, a New York baking soda mogul who first came to the area in 1877 while vacationing with his family; and

Whereas, Henry DeLand was impressed with the area and offered settlers money for the rapid creation of schools and churches; they named the town after him and in 1882 the City of DeLand was incorporated: in 1888 DeLand became the county seat; and

Whereas, the City of DeLand has grown to be a city rich in historical background; it has a heritage that connects our earliest days as a raw frontier to the vigorous pulse beat of the present; and

Whereas, the City of DeLand is a place where memories of a lifetime are made, a place where the community has built on a foundation of cornerstones: community, education, health, technology and a sense of place.

Now, therefore, I, David C. Rigsby, Mayor of the City of DeLand, do hereby proclaim the week of April 4th through 11th, 2001 as

Founders Week

In the City of DeLand, urging all our citizens to enjoy themselves by joining in the many activities planned; and further, commending the dedicated volunteers who have contributed so much in making this Founders celebration a memorable and pleasent occasion.

David C. Rigsby, Mayor
April 1, 2001
