• WWW.cea.berkeley.edu - The Center for Extreme Ultraviolet Astrophysics (CEA) opened in September, 1990. CEA represents the culmination of twenty years of research and student training in the field of EUV astronomy brought to focus by the launch of NASA's research mission, the University of California at Berkeley Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), on June 7, 1992. The CEA Science Operations Center (ESOC) controls the instruments aboard the EUVE science payload and processes its incoming telemetry data. And in February 1997, CEA assumed the EUVE spacecraft command and control operations.

They've hit the wall that was described by Claude Shannon of Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1948 -- Shannon found the theoretical capacity of a 3,000-Hz connection (the frequency of the worldwide voice network) to be about 30 Kbps, above which the signal-to-noise ratio in the channel is such that encoded data can't be reliable extracted. T1 and T3 services are now common offerings, but mostly for businesses. Cable modems are providing high-speed access for some consumers. There is a massive rush to bring high-bandwidth services to everyone.

But most robots look nothing like people, and their "personalities" don't come close to R2D2's cutesy charm. This is a hands-on exhibit that lets visitors shoot hoops using a seven-foot-high robotic arm; outwit a robot in a race against the clock; and begin to understand how a robot senses, thinks, and acts. Robotics lets people experience the world as a robot does-limitations and all.
